PRESS RELEASE
June 2, 2008
GLOBAL TEAM OF SCIENTISTS ADDRESS THE COMMON ROOTS OF CLIMATE CHAOS AND HUNGER In light of the deepening food crisis and climate chaos, The International Commission on the Future of Food and Agriculture chaired by Dr. Vandana Shiva has released "The Manifesto on Climate Change and the Future of Food Security" in Brussels on 27th May, 2008. The Manifesto is an agro-ecological response to the changes posed by climate change to the future of planet's food security, based on mitigation, adaptation and equity. The Manifesto on Climate Change and the Future of Food Security becomes even more urgent because it identifies industrial globalised agriculture both as the cause for climate change and the cause for growing hunger. The increasing reference to genetically engineered crop as solution to climate and hunger is both false and dangerous. Genetically engineered crops do not produce more food but by increasing monoculture and monopolies, they increase vulnerability to both the poor and the planet.
The report assesses that as much as 25% of emissions are caused by current systems of industrial farming and globalised trade. In addition trade liberalization has shifted control over food from local communities and national government to global corporations engaged in speculation and profiteering. This is driving up the food prices.
The report will be sent to the upcoming UN Committee meeting on food, climate and biofuel.
On the basis of science, the report also identifies that research is increasingly showing that biodiverse, ecological and localized food systems reduce green gashouse emission while increasing food and nutritional security. The report of the International Commission on the Future of Food and Agriculture identifies clear strategies for addressing the dual crisis of instability and hunger.
The Manifesto sets out transition imperatives and proposes actions for mitigating and adapting to climate change and for ensuring food security for all.
