Navdanya's Bija Swaraj Yatra (Pilgrimage for Seed Freedom) to Bundelkhand 5th - 9th July 2012

Since Navdanya was started 25 years ago, Bija Yatras have been used to spread awareness about Seed Saving Seed Diversity and Seed Sovereignty.

Through Bija yatra in Bundelkhand from 5th to 9th July 2012 Navdanya reached about 1000 people and organised 8 meetings with local farmers, Activists and youth for spreading the message of seed freedom.

Navdanya has establised 4 community seed banks in the region and 5 women led community seed banks were initiated.

Navdanya means “nine seeds” (symbolizing protection of biological and cultural diversity) and also the “new gift” (for seed as commons, based on the right to save and share seeds In today’s context of biological and ecological destruction, seed savers are the true givers of seed. This gift or “dana” of Navadhanyas (nine seeds) is the ultimate gift – it is a gift of life, of heritage and continuity. Conserving seed is conserving biodiversity, conserving knowledge of the seed and its utilization, conserving culture, conserving sustainability.
