Navdanya: An experiment in Non-Voilent Farming and Dr. Vandana Shiva is an environmental activist, researcher and author. Intellectual property rights, biodiversity, biotechnology and genetic engineering are among the fields where Dr. Vandana Shiva has contributed both intellectually and through campaigns. In 1987, she founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, which led to the creation of Navdanya in 1991, a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources, especially native seed, the promotion of organic farming and fair trade. For the past two decades Navdanya’s efforts have resulted in the conservation of more than 2000 rice varieties from across the country and have established 111 seed banks in 17 states of India. In 2004 she started Bija Vidyapeeth, an international college for sustainable living, located at Dehradun. Dr. Vandana Shiva has authored more than 20 books. About Navdanya

Navdanya means “nine seeds” (symbolizing protection of biological and cultural diversity) and also the “new gift” (for seed as commons, based on the right to save and share seeds In today’s context of biological and ecological destruction, seed savers are the true givers of seed. This gift or “dana” of Navadhanyas (nine seeds) is the ultimate gift – it is a gift of life, of heritage and continuity. Conserving seed is conserving biodiversity, conserving knowledge of the seed and its utilization, conserving culture, conserving sustainability.
