For more than two decades Navdanya has been saving seeds. In 2009 Navdanya started a programme to start conserving and protecting indigenous cattle breed. India is home to rich animal diversity including the Sahiwal, Rathi, Gir, Tharparkar, Vechur, Ongol, Harlikar.
On the aupicious day of Dusshera, 28th of September, 2009, Navdanyas indigenous cattle diversity conservation program was started with six Rathi cows with their calves in village Ramala in Uttar Pradesh.
